Released in June 2001, Anarchy Online has become one of the top MMORPGs to-date, after having some technical difficulties early on. It features a free-to-play or "froob" option or you can purchase the expansions (Shadowlands, Alien Invasion, Lost Eden and Legacy of Xan) which offer a heap more worlds to explore, as well as better items and buffs. There are 14 different professions to choose from as well as 4 different breeds.
The gameplay is difficult to master and could take you years to fully explore the whole game and reach the maximum level of 220. Although the game still suffers from "Lag" a little bit and has inferior graphics compared to some of the new releases MMOs, it still is highly immersive and addictive. This game could seriously effect your life if you are not careful!
Note: This game is free to play, or you can become a subscriber, and receive expansions such as Shadowlands, Alien Invasion and Lost Eden. Also Xan expansion is available with a one-time fee.

First released in May 2003, Eve Online is a space MMORPG featuring stunning graphics, smooth gameplay and a zillion options to mess around with. You play the part of a starship pilot, and although you must create an avatar for your character you are basically in a ship the whole time and dont really walk around the place as such.
Eve is a different kind of MMORPG, in that you dont spend hours grinding XP so you can level up and become stronger. Instead you research skills which you can purchase on the market. There arent really strict rules or guidelines either (well there are to an extent). Players are encouraged to forge the gameplay themselves, in that they can become a pirate who robs and kills, or a hard-working miner. Either of these professions is acceptable in Eve Online. The game-play is very immersive and there is always plenty to do. Definitely worth a look.

Originally launched in April 2004 this game is of the Comic-book Superhero genre, and features some fantastic costumes and fast, exciting game-play. The character creation is unparalleled in any other MMO in my opinion, there are so many different costume variations, which you can match up to your hero or villain's super powers and name to create a character with a specific theme. The battle system is a little more action based than other games, which makes fun and varied gameplay. Stunning graphics add to the appeal of this game, making it a great experience overall.

The role-playing game Ryzom takes place in the year 2531 on planet Atys.
Unlike other planets, Atys is one enormous tree, large enough to sustain an atmosphere and multiple ecosystems on its surface and within its immense underground caves created by large networks of branches and roots.
Four distinct humanoid races, or 'homins', came to exist on Atys hundreds of years prior to the game's current timeline (although it is not specified how or why!) These races developed into separate and fairly isolated societies, inside their own favored ecosystem. Interacting benevolently with all four homin cultures, but hostile towards each other, were two far more advanced races: the Kami, the legendary magical spirits of the earth, and the Karavan, the techno warriors from outer space. The Kami are depicted as elusive, chaotic, playful, and highly protective of Atys, while the Karavan are more secretive and have never been shown outside their protective suits or far from their machinery.
In the game year 2481, the homin races were nearly exterminated when the hostile and horrific mutated insect-like Kitins were accidentally released from their home deep within Atys' roots. The surviving homin refugees began working together in 2485 to rebuild a single, mixed society in relatively remote areas. Soon after that came the additional threat of the 'Goo', a spreading infestation that renders areas uninhabitable and drives wildlife mad with rage.

Star Wars Galaxies |

Released June 2003, this game has suffered a lot of criticism after its "New Game Enhancements" launched in 2005 which included making " Jedi" available as a startup profession instead of players having to complete a quest line to achieve it. Many players left after this, even though the changes were in response to criticisms that the Jedi status was too difficult to achieve. The developers plowed on relentlessly and continued to make massive changes to the game, eventually adding a Trading Card Game to it as well. I played this game mostly after the NGE were implemented, and (not really knowing what they had previously in the game) enjoyed the experience immensely.
The "Jump to Lightspeed" expansion I thought was incredible. This added the Space element to the game, with high-speed dog-fights in space just like in the movies. Starting off as a Jedi was great fun too, you still have to get to a certain level to be able to use a lightsaber. So its not like you can start off being Skywalker-like from day one. The only criticism I would have is that it's a little too easy to achieve the highest level (90) in some professions. An entertainer for example, can get to level 90 in a day or so. The graphics in this game are brilliant,and the soundtrack and sound effects are even better. If you are a true Star Wars fan and you are curious about trying it, you wont be disappointed.

Originally called Project: Entropia, development was started around 1995 in Sweden. Microsoft threatened their existance in 2002 during their testing phase, sending court officials to raid their office, accusing them of using unlicensed software. Regardless of this the game was eventually in January 2003. In my opinion this game is one of the greatest shames in MMORPG history.
Fantastic game, with beautiful graphics and an awesome imagination behind it, but when it comes down to it this game is really just a giant virtual casino. You have to spend money to get anywhere in the game, and it can take quite a lot of money too. Many players have found themselves addicted and lost everything. Others have made their fortunes playing it. You can actually withdraw the money you make as real money. This game holds Guiness Records for the most expensive virtual items ever sold.
If you want to play for free, you can, but its slow. You need to have the patience and determination of a saint to save up enough to do anything with. Ammo costs money, repair on your weapons and armor costs money. In fact, anything you gain will eventually be used up if you dont continue to fund it. Still the game is so much fun, so its worth playing for fun if you can keep your spending under control.
